A Table from the Trash

For a few weeks now, there has been a table that was put out for the trash. It was there for days. it then ended up in the front yard and some of the tenants used it for their tag sale. It was then left on the curb again. We finally gave in and took a look at it. Initially, I thought it was peeling veneer, then discovered it was just heavily water damaged from plant pots and had a thick layer of pollen on it.

We dragged it upstairs and put it on the deck. My thought was to clean it and paint it and use it as another plant table. You can NEVER have enough plant tables, especially a free one with drop leaves.

The wood is seriously damaged and I’m not sure if it’s something that can be saved.

That’s a layer of yellow pine pollen in the top, and it’s a thick crusted layer. Ewww.

Nice dovetail joinery:

I invested in a small belt sander. Once I started sanding, it became apparent that the woods are different on the top:

The initial sanding is done. From a distance, the top sections almost match:

Instead of stripping the intricate base, I made the decision to wash it and paint it. I got a custom deck enamel paint in a dark slate and it looks nice!

The top, while not perfect because of previous damage, the cherry Watco Danish Oil is nice:

It’s not as orange as it appears here, and it should look nice once it dries and airs a bit.
