Let’s talk about the elephant ear

Let’s address the ENORMOUS elephant ear (colocasia esculenta) plant in the garden. It is one of the centerpieces and we just love it.

We got the Extra Large Elephant Ear bulb/tuber from Wanczyk Evergreen Nursery in early April and it was doing well by early June, where it really took off!

When it was initially planted, we put chicken around it to keep out the squirrels, and it worked. As an added touch, nasturtium seeds were added with the hopes that they would hang down and camouflage the pot.

It was cute, almost demure:

And, then, WHOA!

Even the raindrops love this plant.

I touch it a lot. A lot.

In the corner, it anchors the whole garden in its glory:

Once the season is over, we want to unpot it and get it ready for next year. We’ve never tried it, but this specimen is worth trying.
